Guwahati, also known as the “Gateway to the Northeast” is one of the most important cities in the state of Assam. It is a part of the Kamrup district in lower Assam. Dispur, the capital of Assam is located in Guwahati. Guwahati has been mentioned in the ancient Puranas. During the rule of the Varman and the Pala dynasties, Pragjyotishpur (modern day Guwahati) and Durjaya (North Guwahati) were the capitals of the ancient state of Assam.

The city of Guwahati is located in between the Shillong Plateau and the Brahmaputra river. The city is surrounded by hills from all its sides. The Nilachal hill lies at the Western side of the city while the Chitrachal hills are towards the North of the city. To the South of Guwahati lies the Narakasur hill. Physically, the city of Guwahati is further divided into two parts: North and South Guwahati. This strategic location of the city makes it extremely scenic. From fertile land and forests to rivers and mineral reserves, this city is blessed with natural resources.

The climate of Guwahati is sub-tropical and humid. However, the weather is not extreme here. The minimum average temperature of the city is around 19-degree Celsius while the maximum temperature lingers around 29-degree Celsius. The humidity rate is constant but sometimes, it goes up to 80%, particularly during the winter season when the environment is dry. Summers usually begins in March. Monsoons arrive in June. The city receives a healthy annual rainfall. Between July to September, Guwahati receives heavy rainfall. The monsoon is followed by a very short spell of autumn which is followed by winters. During winters, the temperature drops to about 10 degree Celsius.

Since Guwahati falls under an earthquake-prone zone, majority of the houses here are built of wood. Although you will also find concrete structures and houses in Guwahati but generally most of the houses are single-storeyed and use wood as one of the main construction material.
